04 / A note from the creator
Behind the Series
Death Takes a Job is a workplace mockumentary about Death returning from vacation only to discover that he’s been replaced. Suddenly unemployed and stripped of the only purpose he has ever known, Death is forced into the mortal workforce and eventually lands a job as a barista at the Busy Bean Coffee Shop. What starts as a ridiculous career change slowly becomes something much bigger. Through Hector, Zoe, Riley, and the rest of the people around him, Death begins experiencing friendship, frustration, empathy, attraction, and emotions he was never supposed to understand.
As the creator, I’ve worked pieces of my own life into Death’s story. A lot of the series comes from what it feels like to suddenly find yourself starting over, searching for work, questioning where you fit, and trying to find a new sense of purpose when the path you thought you were on changes. I’ve taken some of those very real frustrations and insecurities and filtered them through Death, because there’s something funny to me about the Grim Reaper having to deal with job applications, coworkers, customer service, and feelings he doesn’t know what to do with. Underneath the comedy, the series is really about adapting, connecting with people, and realizing that sometimes losing what defined you gives you the chance to discover who you are outside of it.
